Is BookTok Actually About Reading?

Yes you can actually read this much and have a job calm down

Once a month, Melody and I pick an episode of the Culture Study pod to share with newsletter readers. I knew this one was gonna be one of those as soon as we stopped recording. Melody and I often throw around ideas for what we *wish* we could title an episode, and today's fav was "Are BookTokers Actually Dumb Bitches You Feel Superior To?" That gives you an idea of one of the places we go with this one....but we also talk about tropes, Rachel Cusk BookTok, the current aesthetics of book culture, and so much more. BookTok is immense, BookTok is divisive, and unless you, yourself, are deep in BookTok....it's almost certainly not what you think it is. This one's another Just Trust Me for sure. Af you like what you hear, remember Culture Study newsletter subscribers get a MASSIVE discount! -

“Most people who complain about BookTok have never seen a BookTok.” Alyssa Morris drops that insight about two-thirds of the way through the episode, and it’s such a good point that I almost want to make it the title of the episode. Most people have an idea of what BookTok is (people talking about books on TikTok) but no real understanding of the immensity of BookTok. It’s talking about what you’ve read, sure, but it’s also about recommendations, and performance, and the aesthetics of reading culture — and the criticisms of it have a lot more to do with weird ideas about what reading (or talking about reading!) “should” look like.

If you’re interested in reading culture, you’ll be interested in this episode — full stop. Let it surprise you! And make sure to check out Alyssa’s BookTok newsletter, which has quickly become one of my favorite reads of the week.

We’re so grateful for all of you who’ve helped us make the podcast a reality through your monthly and yearly subscriptions. We love being able to take this show wherever we want, and we’re able to do that because we’re truly independent — and don’t have to read any weird ads for women’s supplements!

Right now, we’ve made enough through subscriptions to pay Melody through December but without more… we can’t keep making the show. (And if you’re already a Culture Study newsletter subscriber, you get a screaming deal, but you have to click there to use it; it is *not* applied automatically).

And if you’d like to add the subscriber-only podcast to your podcast app, here’s how. Also, you can now access the subscriber-only feed in Spotify!!! Go here to set it up.

Show Notes:

We’re currently looking for your questions for future episodes about:

  • THE STATE OF KIDS TOYS — what’s weird? What’s interesting? What doesn’t make sense?

  • Why does it feel like thrifting sucks now

  • The new Gladiator + Paul Mescal JUST GENERALLY

  • Anything you need advice or want musings on for the AAA segment

  • You can submit them (and ideas for future eps) here (this is the subscriber-only form!)

For today’s discussion: What’s your relationship to BookTok? What are your thoughts on book recs as a popularity contest? Why do you think some people get so cranky about other people reading a lot?
