I struggled for years to understand the attraction of voyeuristically gazing at 'failed' relationships. But it's actually a way for millions to re-draw the boundaries of acceptability in a rapidly changing society that otherwise confuses the hell out of them. The more the change is bewildering, the more our brains look for material to react to...in a slow-changing society, I doubt 'sad smut' has much cultural value or interest. Just a thought.
