This is interesting because in my family the gift-giving expectation was a lot more intergenerational - like, your aunts/uncles/elders give nice gifts to help you 'set up your household' and your peers celebrate your love, but aren't really expected to spring for elaborate gifts. I'm sure this is all super specific to the class and culture of the families involved though.
