The message was that we needed to prepare to take care of ourselves emotionally and financially, because it was dangerous to count on anyone else or any institution. Coldness and negativity was a huge part of my mother's strategy. My father was warm but very untrusting of anything outside the family.
My parents were high school educated and didn't pretend to understand or try to guide post-secondary education except that college was assumed, and we were expected to study something through which we could eventually earn a living. And we were to be extremely frugal in life.
