This is the weekend edition of Culture Study — the newsletter from Anne Helen Petersen, which you can read about here. If you like it and want more like it in your inbox, consider subscribing.
I'm an inveterate commenter, yet mostly what I like to do is come here and read and listen. That's really special and a tribute to your ability to build community, AHP.
I received my subscription renewal notice a couple of days ago, so I knew it had been one year -- congratulations, AHP! This newsletter, and the comments/community, have become a valued part of my life, and I always look forward to seeing it in my inbox.
Oh no, I subscribed after the "One Dumb Thing" post last December and now that I've read all those comments my "household-y things I am seriously considering buying" is getting nearly as long as my "want to read" list!
i echo other comments below. this is a well run community, and i value the people willing to put online: recommendations, stories, experiences, values, hot takes, and everything else. i'm not a huge discord-engager, but i check in once a week or so, and i enjoy reading the banter/stories/updates from more frequent speakers/texters. anyways this site/community is a good thing, and i appreciate that it exists.
"I still can’t believe this works, but it does, and it works because of you."
FTR, Yglesias tweeted about it, I was already on substack, I signed up. It's absolutely worth the 5$/month.
"This has been the weirdest, grief-filled year."
Year and half? I got Covid way before most, and got to go through Death & Long Covid before most, and thus got to go through recovering pretty much on my ownsome. ('Covid tests? Who has those?') I guess it was fun, but not, ya know, real fun.
Now I am over here keeping up with/bitching about Afghanistan and cranking up the gears to argue about the same crap I was arguing about 20 years ago, minus one month. (Now there's a big circle. Afghanistan has unwound to the Taliban in almost exactly the same way, with exactly the same speed as Afghanistan unwound to the US almost 20 years ago. No points for being accurate or going against the CW, mind, that doesn't put the poached sole with the white wine sauce on the table at the think tank.)
I’m a new paying member, as of last month, when I read your three-piece series on Master’s degrees and knew I had to support your work. You gave an important and convincing insight into an overlooked problem—exactly what journalism should be doing. I am so grateful for your work, and for the community you have built!
Thank you!!! I love your writing and newsletter. As a former/recovering academic, I still love to read analysis that is fun and accessible. Congratulations!

So grateful for the community you've created and facilitated 💕

What a year!! Congratulations on an amazing start to Culture Study — can't wait for year two!
Definitely renewing later this week. Thank you for the great work!
You're doing such incredible work, and I'm grateful to be here!!!

Your comment reminded me of this SNL skit from the fall of 01 -- https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1889399537801472 -- (Sorry all, google only led me to this link.)

I really, really appreciate and learn from your work, AHP. Congrats on one year!
The community and the threads created by it are the favorite parts of my weeks.
