Thank you! I’m literally working on founding a women’s cafe now in Providence RI and have gotten a copy of this to study. Our plan is to outsource all cooking/baking to local woman-owned companies, of which there are tons here, and ask patrons to serve and bus themselves and pay on their phones. Kind of like airport food kiosks. Lots to learn though and no doubt this book will be helpful in keeping us thinking about the feminist and intersectional aspects.
Can I just suggest that having to pay on your phone will exclude a ton of people? (My phone doesn't do that, for instance, and I would be unlikely to get whatever app enabled it even if I could.) So many places being cashless is bad enough, but forcing certain phone tech into it as well, ugh. (Just me saying this, though, not trying to be rude!)
Great input. Thank you. I think we could come up with a separate system for members who would prefer to write IOUs with paper and pen and be billed weekly.
I loved this interview and can’t wait to pick up the book. I work in sustainable local food systems and food distribution, and that triangle of paying farmers and farm workers, paying food service (and distribution and/or processing, I’d semi-selfishly add!), and making good food accessible is really at the heart of everything we talk about!
Yes! When I lived in NYC I would make the drive to New Paltz for the sole purpose of buying chocolate. (The furious vulvas and cardamom caramels are my faves.) Now that I’m in the Midwest I get them delivered once or twice a year, and they bring me immense joy.

This is making me want to dig into my copy of the Bloodroot Collective cookbook. Thank you for the inspiration!
I'm so glad Lagusta's Lucious is part of this! I'm always amazed and inspired by her. (And her salted Galapagos turtles.)
