I'm the opposite - mysteries with no cats, clergy, or recipes - just plenty of swearing and graphic violence.

(for mysteries) James Lee Burke, Robert Crais (ok, his detective has a cat), Lee Child, Don Winslow, T. Jefferson Parker.

I'm somewhat nonplussed that given the diversity of the authors I've read, so many of my favorite authors are American white guys. I used to read Robert Barnard, and read a lot of African American mystery authors years ago (Walter Mosley, Barbara Neely, Valerie Wilson Wesley) as well as those set outside the U.S. (e.g. Bangkok 8, Nairobi Heat).
